Adopt-A-Family

  • Adopt-A-Family will open the first business day in November and will close the Monday before Blue Santa’s scheduled delivery day.

  • Our families come in all shapes and sizes.

  • A family of 1 which is typically a senior to families of 2 – 22. Adults & Children.

  • You will make contact, shop for and deliver to the family you have selected.  Don’t forget to wrap and label the gifts.

If you are uncomfortable having direct contact with the families, you are welcome to come and volunteer in the warehouse and help us prepare for the deliveries Blue Santa will make.

Review applications online.

  • Select your family/families by noting the Application Number for each of the families you wish to adopt.

  • You can search families by Zip Code, Number of Children or Number in Family.

  • You will also be able to see the reason they have applied and need assistance.

  • We will require the Application Number in order to release your family/families to you. When we release a family to you, you will receive their contact information and related details.

Contact Your Family
Once you have selected the family, the family will be assigned and released, you will be able to view all the information entered on the application regarding their family.

  • Contact the family.
  • Block your phone number, on a land line dial *67 then the family’s telephone number.
  • Speak to the applicant, identify yourself as their Adopt-A-Family Sponsor.
  • For your protection it is best to only provide your First Name. Do not share your phone number or last name if possible.
  • Inquire what their “Holiday Needs Might Be?”  (See requested guidelines below). Some may ask for everything including the kitchen sink.  You are only obligated to provide them what is within YOUR ability to give.
  • Establish a date and time that you will be delivering the gifts to your family.
  • If you are unable to reach your family you can either choose to deliver on the same delivery day as Blue Santa - December 16th, between 8am and 5pm (the families have already been instructed to be home on this date).
  • Shopping for the children should be age and gender appropriate.
  • If you find that your experience with the family is not a positive one, or if you are unable to contact your family please contact us immediately and we will release the family and you can choose another family.

Note:  Do not give your family your personal information, telephone number(s) – if they wish to get in touch with you, it is required they do so by calling the Blue Santa Adopt a Family line at 512-974-9194 or by email at bluesanta@austintexas.gov we will be the go between.

Guidelines to Giving
“Your giving is a personal decision based on your budget and your ability to donate.”

We ask that at a minimum you provide:

  • A means for a Holiday Meal for the family.
  • A gift for the children14 and under.
  • If you wish to provide for the children 15 and older or adults that is up to your individual discretion.
  • All family members should be listed on the application.

MEAL - We have found that gift cards from HEB, Randall’s, Super Wal-Mart or Super Target are the best option. A gift card offers a sense of dignity, allowing them to purchase their own food; moreover, the Austin community has become very rich in cultures, diverse lifestyles, specials diets, and personal taste. The $$ value of the gift card will depend on the size of the family you select.  We suggest a $20 gift card for a single family member and add $5 per person for each additional family member.

GIFTS - Gifts for the children can be toys, games, books and clothing, etc. You may also provide a gift for the entire family or the head of household. (We have individuals that provide a tree, decorations, stockings filled with goodies, gifts and gift cards)  Again, “Your giving is a personal decision based on your budget and your ability to donate.” Don’t forget to decorate or wrap the gifts.

DELIVERY
Schedule a date and time that you will be delivering your gifts to your family. It is important to call them a few days before that delivery date to re-confirm. Re-check the address, get directions or ask for apartment numbers and gate codes. If the address has changed, please contact the Operation Blue Santa Adopt a Family Line at 512-974-9194 or by email at bluesanta@austintexas.gov immediately and report the change. Do not delivery gifts to a changed address or a meeting place.

If you are unable to reach your family you can either choose to deliver on the same delivery day as Blue Santa - December 16th, between 8am and 5pm (the families will be notified that if they have not been contacted by a sponsor to be home on this date).  You can also contact Blue Santa and we will release the family and you can choose a different family.
