Guidelines to Adopting-A-Family

Adopt a Family will BEGIN November 1st

We need families or businesses to adopt our families.  Adopt-A-Family is a direct connection to the families needing assistance.  You select a family, shop and deliver a Holiday Box to the family.  We ask that you provide a meal for the family and gifts in the home to children 14 and under.

PLEASE NOTE:  ADOPTION CLOSE DECEMBER 15TH, 2017

Please read through the information and instructions prior to registering.

Please check back periodically if you do not find a family that interests you, we will add new families each day.

“Your giving is a personal decision based on your budget and your ability to donate.”

Adopt-A-Family
Our families come in all shapes and sizes.
From a family of 1 who are typically seniors to families of 2 – 22. Adults & Children

Review applications online.
Select your family/families by noting the Application Number for each of the families you wish to adopt.

We will require the Application Number in order to release your family/families to you.

When we release a family to you, you will receive their contact information and related details.

Contact Your Family
Once you have received the contact information on your family/families, here is what you do.

  * Go ahead and contact them.

  * Dial *67 then the family’s telephone number.

  *

Begin the relationship process by asking to speak to the Head of Household as it appears on their application and identify yourself as their Christmas Assistance Adopt-A-Family Sponsor.  It is best to only provide your First Name.   Do not give them your Last Name or personal contact numbers.

  *

Inquire what their “Holiday Needs Might Be?” Be sure to have paper and pencil ready to take down gift ideas and sizes. (Some may ask for everything including the kitchen sink.)  You are only obligated to provide them what is within YOUR ability to give. If you find that your experience with the family is not a positive one, please contact us immediately and we will release the family and re-assign another family to you.

  * You will also need to establish a date and time that you will be delivering the gifts to your family.

  * If you are unable to reach your family you can either choose to deliver on the same delivery day as Blue Santa - December 17th, between 8am and 5pm (the families will be notified that if they have been contacted by a sponsor to be home on this date).  Shopping for the children should be age and gender appropriate.  You can contact Blue Santa and we will release the family and you can choose a different family.

NOTE:  Do not give your family your personal information, telephone number(s) – if they wish to get in touch with you, it is required they do so by calling the Blue Santa Adopt a Family line at   512-974-9194 or by email at bluesanta@austintexas.gov, we will be the go between.

Guidelines to Giving
“Your giving is a personal decision based on your budget and your ability to donate.”

We ask that you meet at a minimum the following two giving options:

  * Provide the family with the means for a meal and gifts for the children (14 and under).  If you wish to provide for the kids 15 and older that is up to your individual discretion.

MEAL - We have found that gift cards from HEB, Randall’s, Super Wal-Mart or Super Target are the best option. A gift card offers a sense of dignity, allowing them to purchase their own food, moreover, the Austin community has become very rich in cultures, diverse lifestyles, specials diets, and personal taste.  The $$ value of the gift card will depend on the size of your family.

GIFTS - Gifts for the children can be toys, games, books and clothing, etc. You may also provide a gift for the entire family or the head of household. (We have individuals that provide a tree, decorations, stockings filled with goodies, gifts, gift cards and pay delinquent utility bills.) Again, “Your giving is a personal decision based on your budget and your ability to donate.” Don’t forget to decorate or wrap the gifts.

DELIVERY
Schedule a date and time that you will be delivering your gifts to your family. It is important to call them a few days before that delivery date to re-confirm. Re-check the address, get directions or ask for apartment numbers and gate codes. If the address has changed, please contact the Austin Police Operation Blue Santa Adopt a Family Line at 512-974-9194 or email at bluesanta@austintexas.gov immediately and report the change. Do not delivery gifts to a changed address or a meeting place.

If you are unable to reach your family you can either choose to deliver on the same delivery day as Blue Santa - December 17th, between 8am and 5pm (the families will be notified that if they have not been contacted by a sponsor to be home on this date).  You can also contact Blue Santa and we will release the family and you can choose a different family.

DONATE – If you are not comfortable with this giving relationship, however you want to contribute, we ask that you please make a donation. We welcome Cash, Check, and Gift Card Donations.  Donations can be made on-line to Austin Police Operation Blue Santa - go back to our home page and click the Make a difference Donate button.
